In previous articles, we have written three paragraphs: an introductory paragraph (see here) and two for development (see here). Now, we need to write the last paragraph of the dissertation, which is the conclusion.
The basic function of the concluding paragraph is to reaffirm what was said throughout the essay, that is: in the concluding paragraph, we reaffirm the thesis (which is the main idea of the essay).
Of course the question of completion paragraph depends on the type of contest you are doing. In Enem, for example, we need to problematize the topic throughout the essay and make a proposed solution in the concluding paragraph. In other vestibular classes this is not necessary and in these cases there are several strategies to make the conclusion. One of them is to work with definitions, concepts and characteristics, such as:
- Therefore, like all technological advances, the Internet can bring benefits or harm to society and this will depend on the purposes of those who use it. Regardless of this fact, it is undeniable to say that the internet is present in people’s daily lives and is part of modern culture.
The expression in blue makes the resumption of everything that was exposed in the essay (reaffirmation of the thesis). The part in red follows the strategy of working with definitions, concepts or characteristics, since we express the characteristics of the internet (it is present in the daily life of people and is part of modern culture).
We can also use the projection strategy, working with perspectives and projections for the near future:
- Therefore, like all technological advances, the Internet can bring benefits or harm to society and this will depend on the purposes of those who use it. Regardless of this fact, it is undeniable to say that the Internet will continue to be present in people’s daily lives, influencing society and shaping the characteristics of our culture.
Regardless of the strategy we use, we should always reaffirm what was said throughout the text without adding or developing new arguments. If we add some argument, the conclusion paragraph may become a new development paragraph, that is: its writing will be without completion (it will end up “out of the blue”, without having a decent closing).
Paragraph of Conclusion
As I said before, the writing of Enem is a bit different because it works with the problematization of the theme. In a topic such as the internet, for example, our essay will be more focused on internet problems, which must be resolved with an intervention proposal that should appear in the conclusion paragraph (it is mandatory to present this intervention proposal). Because of this, the completion paragraph of the Enem essay is often larger than normal (it may even be the size of the development paragraph).
How to make the Intervention Proposal?
Every problem has causes. So if you act on the causes of the problem you can solve the problem. So, ask yourself what are the factors that cause or aggravate the problem, and ask yourself which are the possible agents that can act on these causes to solve the problem.
Examples of agents: government, business, the media and the press (with all their opinion makers, exerting a great influence on society), NGOs, institutions, education, awareness, technology, you, the your neighbor, your family, communities, all kinds of social organizations, etc.
That is, think about the factors that aggravate or cause the problem and think about the agents who can help solve the problem.
Now you know how to do all three types of essay paragraphs (introduction, development, and conclusion).
Now, let’s talk about some important aspects of writing, such as coherence, cohesion, originality, among others. All these aspects enhance and develop your writing, and because of this, it is important that you master these editorial aspects.
